Dayspring by Anthony Oliveira sits on a bookshelf. The title and author name are in white, Gothic script. The cover is a renaissance painting of a man looking up and to the left, with an arm reaching towards the right. It’s stitched with a photo of a naked man and the arm from the painting blends into an arm on his leg.

Dayspring by Anthony Oliveira

I really enjoyed Dayspring! I read the short story it’s an expansion of many, many years ago and that stuck with me. I’ve followed Anthony Oliveira’s work for a long time because of it, and knew I had to pre-order this book when it came out!

While I did really enjoy it, finding the poetic writing very evocative and pretty, I did find it fell short on being an expansion of a prior work. It did feel as if there was a lot of ‘extra’ to it, when it could’ve been about 100 or so pages shorter. I also felt that I may not have been the target audience, as I’m not religious nor was I raised religious, so my understanding of certain Biblical references come from the Veggie Tales.

That said, I think this is the perfect book for those who wish that instead of focusing on Greek Mythology, Anne Carson wrote about the Bible.

if you could see the way out / it wouldn’t be much of a miracle
