Fractured Infinity by Nathan Taveres sits on a bookshelf. The book cover is blue with the heads of two men mirrored to each other, with one upright facing left and the other upsidedown facing right. They’re radiating out from the center and alternated each repetition.

I thought that I would like this book a lot more than I did, but I did still enjoy it. I thought the plot was really fun and creative and I liked the characters, but the pacing was a bit off.

This is a great book if you’re looking for a multiversal romp with characters who are morally grey and self-serving. That’s not a bad thing! I think too often modern media wants characters to be perfect people but that just isn’t the case most of the time.

In a weird way, maybe because I was reading them at the same time, this reminded me of Stories of Your Life. They’re not that similar, but the way they both are generally based in a current-alternate-history-scifi setting had a similar vibe that was interesting to contrast. Obviously this is a novel, and Stories of Your Life is a short story collection, so there weren’t any specific connections, but the concepts felt related.

Ultimately this book was a pretty short read that took me forever because the pacing was just… so weird. It was so slow in places and so fast in others. I felt like I was hearing too much about things that should’ve been wrapped up and didn’t hear enough about the important things, especially fleshing out character dynamics. This book should’ve been, like, a hundred pages longer at a minimum and I think that would’ve pushed it to a four or even five star read.

I would keep this a secret even if it rotted me from the inside out because I would launch a million asteroids into a million worlds just to keep him safe.
